US Mixed

Lots of permutations still possible, some of those on the bubble playing each other.
7 wins you're in the final 4...I think its possible for a 6-3 team to be 5th. Or a 5-4 team to make the final 4. I imagine its a little tense in Detroit.

Was wondering where everyone went. Guess no one cares about the mixed except a few of us.

The suprise has to be team Washington record.

You should sign up to play in Texas next year since 3/4 of team "Arizona" doesn't live there.

Washington still alive, from what I can see, but needs help from ND. What's up with Texas/Arizona? A team is supposed to have at least 2 players from the same region I thought.

What u mean mad dog Maskel didn't move to Arizona? I know its allowed - but how can one play club nationals out of Wisc and than mixed out of Arizona. On events without advancement beyond nationals - this shouldn't be allowed

I agree, Maskel has no business curling there. Did he playdown in Wisconsin first? He needs to get a life.

you need to stop worrying about Richard. he is a good guy that loves to curl. he has a friend from Arizona who was a very good curler in Canada. i played juniors out of Minnesota and live in Wisconsin. there is nothing wrong with what he is doing so mind yourselves and leave my team mate out of it. you need to get a life. he is very happy with his!

Congrats Team ND!!! Great Job!!!

As for the AZ scenario: Wrong is just plain-old wrong, no matter the name(s) on the line-up. It is ludicrous to even read anyone trying to defend the indefensible! What a friggin' joke! The track record of the USCA is so full of BS in this area, it would be nice to finally see an end to these manipulations of the rules. Once again I ask: Why are there always controversies with the USCA rules?

If this (teams playing out of any state/region, w/o consideration for the spirit of the competition itself) is what the majority of the players want, why not a 32-team, triple K/O, cash-spiel style event? Play to 8 quarter finalists and allow anyone, from anywhere in? What a party it would be, take a couple less days, more money for the host club, etc.

Maskel played for AZ??? Oh geeze...what next? Mars???

I agree with DBZ, if you're not going to have residency requirements, why not just have the 32 team, triple KO???

Richard is wonderful, he brings so much to the sport.
I'd like to send him to the Antarticspiel this August.
Anyone want to help chip in for a one way ticket?

wow. either none of you know him or your all assholes. he brings lots to the sport and has represented us well at worlds. he has accomplished lots and i think he deserves the respect he gives you. and if you don't think he respects you he may have a good reason for it. stop bashing him and find something else to do.

It has nothing to do with the person, it has to do with the concept of what region do you represent. When 3/4 of the "arizona" team dont live or play there, that is a problem.

I plan on petioning for a new region next year, Nevada. I went there once so that should qualify me as being able to represent them. OR maybe Rhode Island, I drive through it each summer. Does that count?

Ditto the sentiments jhcurl (and I didn't have to call anyone an AH either) :)

To quote a local coach/TV commentator....

"Previous glory does not grant a blank check....sooner or later, familiarity breeds contempt."

Hey JH, how about forming a team from Puerto Rico? ;)

i don't disagree with you. there should be something done to change the rule but as of now nothing can be changed until next year so let sleeping dogs lie and file your petition for next year. i just don't think its fair they go after Richard. there are 2 others that are not from Arizona on the team. go after them.

Yeah the Arizona team only had one actual Arizona resident (Fred), but you know what? I (read, a competitor in the event) couldn't care less. They're great people, a great team, and they bring up the entire strength of the field.

I understand Richard has a bit of a reputation around the USCA, but so what? Did he ever do anything to you all personally? For my money, I was glad to have him around to take in as many opinions about the event (as well as others) for him to take back. He knows what's up, so stop being envious and start being gracious like....well....curlers.

Matt,

Be careful with your words. Don't let immaturity get the best of you. It is about the concept, not the individual.

I don't know anyone on the Arizona team, so there is nothing personal when I say that the rules should be tightened up for next season. I was under the impression that there had to be at least 2 members from the region for the team to be legal. I guess that is no longer true.

Did that region (MOPAC?)have a playdown for the spot or did Arizona SUAG? If it was a suag, I can see an injustice, because they took a spot from a team that played down...the spot would have been filled from a region with the next highest participation number (after ND).

I admit..there are too manay facts of which I am not aware...but it seems that the rules should more closely align with those of the club nationals.

There was a playdown with 3 teams in Seattle during early February.

Okay all you Einsteins out there. What should the rule be? The AZ team had four players from four different regions that wanted to play mixed together. The skip was from AZ. Should they have been barred from competing? The rules for mixed are not the same as the rules for club playdowns.

I dont think it really matters that much. What we should be talking about is the run back in the 7th that Duane made and the week they had. They all played great and they deserved the win. Way to go Duane and crew.

I don't think its right that they play out of a state with only one person from there, but it was with-in the rules. So it does not matter. If we want to change it we have to send a letter or call the USCA.

Most competitions here in Canada have a residency requirement. The exception is the Olympic Trials, as in 2006 with Brad Gushue's team from NL picking up Russ Howard from NB, so that would be a rules committee issue.

What would you do? from above asks the question that the "whiners" need to address. 4 people from 4 regions want to play down in the mixed.

What suggestions do people have? Until I hear a better suggestion, I say they play out of any of the 4 regions they want. This is Mixed playdowns for US. No further competition at the International level.

My Suggestion:

If the Mixed National want different states or regions to be represented then make a residency requirement. If you are curling MOPAC mixed then everyone needs to live in one of the MOPAC states. If you live in Madison then you can playdown in the Wisconsin Mixed. I think this is what the USCA is trying to acheive.

On the other hand, if it doesn't matter that states or regions are represented then leave it wide open like the Olympic playdowns and have qualifiers in different spots and let people pick where they want to compete out of.

The second suggestion leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion (unneeded travel being first) but I feel it needs to be one or the other. What good is it to call the team "Arizona" if three/fourths of them are transplants?

I thought the point was to keep this a regional competition. I recall that there was a requirement some years ago that at least 2 had to come from the same state or region, but I have no way to document that. The jackets say Wisc. North Dakota, etc...regions; and the participants should come from that region. Beginning next season.

I would think that that at minimum the participants should be State or association (i.e. MOPAC)dues paying members and have curled regularly in that area. Otherwise what does meaning does "Arizona" have on the jacket?

Because a person has the ability to take large amounts of time off from work and can afford to fly around the country should not be a determining factor of who is qualified to represent a region.

What are the chances that the USCA will do anything to change this? I wanted to check the rules but the website is still not 100%.

Changes are already in discussion and will be discussed at Spring Meeting. It was brought up by people in AZ and other MOPAC clubs. Contact your USCA rep if you have feelings either way.

As member of the Arizona team, I would like to set a few facts straight. 2 of us (me being one of them) curls less than 20 games a year on our home ice...arena ice at that...if you can even call it curling ice - zambonie runs dominate our games. We had to beat least year's second place team from the USCA Mixed two times to make it out of our region. Richard is an awesome ambassador for the sport - there are few players in the US who have devoted as much time as he has to ensuring that the sport continues to grow - at all levels. The rules allow anyone in the US to play out of any region. While those of you who have dedicated ice may think that is a problem, those of us who live 500 miles from the next club consider that rule to be one of the reasons we still love and participate in the sport. Let's work together to encourage curling, not to beat up those of us who have to travel to play.
