"Nude" Curling Calendar

"Nude" Curling Calendar

Okay, okay....now I've seen everthing!!!!

Perfect timing. Right before the Olympics.

Hey sex sells.... There is reason female volleyball players wear
those tiny little shorts or string bikini's on the beach game.

Tasteful nudes are usually considered art, not porno. There are few things in life better than a naked attractive woman and curling. throw in cold beer and I am in heaven.

From the two shots I saw I thought it was well done.

If the person who got nude doesn't mind raising money this way then it should be okay. All you have to do is not buy it or not look at the pics if it disturbs your level of morality.

Mike

Does it really sell?

From the press release:
"First it was the Waltzing Matildas, the Australian national women’s soccer team. Then the concept hit Canadian shores with the national women’s teams of cross-country skiing and rugby."

Yes, well, we all know the Australian national women's soccer team went on to great popularity after their calendar. And the Canadian x-country ski team! Man, I can't go anywhere without seeing their pictures on billboards and magazines all over this country.

Oh, wait a minute. Maybe not.

I agree with you that the shots were tasteful, and I have no problem with the calendar per say. However, I think for a sport such as curling to have something like this comes across as a bit more pathetic than other sports. The difference is that we need this publicity to get any type of coverage for our sport. This is the first story of the year that the Ottawa Citizen has covered related to curling, and that's sad. There's been a lot of great weeks on the tour that the media has missed.

Don't you think its time for new curling gloves or curling mitts?

Mikey,
To paraphrase an old media hack's expression, "I don't care what they say about the sport as long as they spell it right".
If this is what it takes to attract new (i.e. younger) people to the sport then I say go for it.
I disagree that "for a sport such as curling to have something like this comes across as more pathetic than other sports".
What makes curling so much more high and mighty than women's soccer or x-country skiing?
As one of the so-called "old boys" of this sport, I am happy to see any initiative being taken that could help draw more people to it.

How about the publicity that Anastasia (sorry, forget last name)generated, you know... the woman that played Lead for the Russian squad at the World's in Winnipeg a few years back?

If you have something against a very attractive woman that happens to be a good curler, then I think that is unfair.

Attractive woman and men (who are judged in the same fashion somewhat) should not be penalized by their looks anymore than ugly people should.

Just no one would pay for a calander of naked ugly people!!!

But seriously, nakedness means a whole lot less in Europe. North Americans simply do not get to set the rules on fashion and morality for the rest of the world.

Lighten up and turn the page if it offends thyne eye!!!

That's the problem. Other than Pat Ryan's daughter who are these chicks? Let's get some real, down home, good curling Canadian ladies to do their own naked calendar. Maybe for the Schmirler charity? I'd happily plonk down $25.00 for a line-up that featured Jen Jones, Kelly Law, Shelly McDonald, Jill Officer and others!

Now that would be a calendar!

I think this calendar was originally meant for the European market, because many of the European ladies featured are well-known there.
Leave it to us Canadians to critique it, when it really wasn't meant for us anyway!

Now there's an interesting comment. if it wasn't meant for us, then why sell it on the CANADIAN Curling News website for $25.00 CANADIAN?. LOL-we'll critique it all we want.

I think what the last poster meant was that the CCNews picked up on it afterwards. That is was not originally planned for
the canadian market, but that's cool that the europeans
asked 2 canadian to pose in it. That could be why it
reached canada so quickly.

Hey, does anyone know who the other model/curlers are?

Just got an e-mail. They say shipping is more than they thought and they want an extra $11.00 for shipping! Seems to me they should have done their homework earlier!

Here's the posting from the Curling News about the increased shipping price for the calendar for anyone interested.

http://www.thecurlingnews.com/calendarrevised.html

They make it sound like you only have two choices 1) Pay the additional $11.00 or 2) Cancel your order! This is what ticks me off about this! There is a third option that should have been presented to everyone. Process my order as it was originally placed and agreed upon. A contract is a contract folks. They made an offer and the buyer accepted it. Therefore a contract was made for 1) The buyer to pay the amount that was listed and 2) the seller to supply the good at the price as agreed upon.

Perhaps if The Curling News had given this third option to me I might have been more forgiving of the mistake made. This, however, was not the case. They have tried to intimidate everyone to select either the pay more or cancel the order options. This is a poor approach to this problem.

I accepted the offer The Curling News made and I expect them to honour the contract. I paid through PayPal and if I don't receive my order as contracted for,at the price contracted for, I will be contacting PayPal and filing a complaint with them. Let's hope it doesn't go this far.

It's unfortunate it was a fund-raising endeavour, but TCN's approach has really ticked me off!

I don't think the people involved expected this calendar to be such a hot seller. Like anyone selling something for the first time on the web, some mistakes in estimating costs were probably made. The super high demand for the calendar must have exacerbated the problems – I imagine the people involved would have been losing their shirts if they had not upped the shipping price. I think they handled it fairly – the options are to re-order at the original price or just tell them to forget it. Cut them a break – this calendar got curling in SI this week. And the article that accompanied the story did not include the usual dumb jokes about the sport.

How could the number of calendars they sell affect the shipping charges? There's obviously a cost to mail this, whether they're sending 1 or 101 and whoever put the original pricing in place screwed up.

Hi folks.

We are quite unhappy about the added charge, for a number of reasons. First, there's the potential hit on our reputation, which has been one of solid strength in the curling industry for 49 years running.

Most importantly we know we will lose some sales of the calendar, which means the 12 brave and determined athletes/models will lose out on the optimum scale of their fundraising effort.

No, we are not doing this for free. Our wholesaler margin is however quite small; so small that a large curling retailer, who has expressed interest in selling the calendar as well, is unsure of proceeding given the small profit margin.

Nor are we 'bailing out.' This add-on is a disappointing but necessary step, and we are determined to see this project through so that the athletes receive some value for their fundraising efforts.

Mistakes were made on both sides of the Atlantic and the increased shipping and handling charge is exactly, and only, that. Unfortunately, we are a very small company and we simply cannot lose our... er, shirt -- so to speak -- on this project. We have no intention of bankrupting our prime business -- curling publishing and information dissemination, which is already a challenging and very tiny profit vehicle -- due to the calendar.

Fortunately, there is great news, and that is in customer response. To the more than 90 per cent of purchasers who have elected to pay the additional charge, we know your faith will be rewarded by the product arriving in a reinforced package that shall withstand all violent attempts by Canada Post -- who are not in our good books, by the way -- to destroy it, thus cheesing you off even further. The good faith shown by purchasers shall be worth it in the end.

And to that 90 percentile, I'm sure I can also pass along the heartfelt thanks of 12 lovely ladies, including the photographer/athlete/model herself, Ana Arce, who has been consulted on this disappointing but necessary price adjustment every step of the way.

Cheers,
George Karrys
